The Witching Hour

Rob calls you at 3:01AM telling you that there’s someone sitting next to his bed.

You tell him to turn on his nightlight and they’ll go away, then hang up.

Rob calls you at 3:02AM the next morning, telling you that they’re back, and they’re talking this time.

You ask him if he took his Haldol before bed and hang up after he takes it with a glass of water.

Rob calls you at 3:11AM and asks you if you know who Samuel Monroe is.

You ask him why he had to call at this hour to ask you.

He tells you that’s who has been sitting next to him the past few nights.

You tell him you’re calling his therapist in the morning.

Rob calls you at 3:16AM and tells you that Sam is telling him about the garden he kept in the backyard.

You wonder why you bothered going to sleep in the first place.

He says that he thinks he’ll start the garden back up, since Sam misses it.

You can’t understand anything he says after that, but stay on the line until 3:45AM anyway.

Rob calls you at 3:24AM and says Sam is angry.

You ask him why.

He’s crying, and tells you that Sam is shouting at him because he hasn’t started digging up the yard yet.

You soothe him as he mumbles incoherently until Sam goes away shortly after 4AM.

Rob calls you at 3:29AM and says he’s bleeding.

You ask him what happened.

He tells you that Sam is even angrier tonight and Sam scratched his skin.

You tell him you’ll be over as soon as possible.

Rob doesn’t call you the next night.

You go to his house to find him digging a hole by the tree in his backyard.

You ask him why he’s digging.

He blinks and simply says because Sam is hiding.

Rob digs until 3:33AM.

You tiredly lean against the tree trunk and ask him why he’s stopped.

He tells you he found Sam.

You sweep your flashlight over the ground and freeze when you see the bones.

Rob smiles and tells you that Sam isn’t yelling any more.

Rob doesn’t even turn over in his sleep, even though it’s 3:42AM.

You shake him lightly and ask him if Sam is around.

He asks you who Sam is.

You say nobody and tell him to go back to sleep.

That was creepy! Fucking hell, Rob, I guess it always is the quiet ones, lol. Nicely done, really good pacing and buildup to the end. I like how the narrator (whoever it is) slowly starts to take Rob more seriously as the phone calls get weirder and more desperate.

Awesome job with the prompt. :)

haunting is the word that comes to mind. this was fucking fantastic, and like,

Rob smiles and tells you that Sam isn’t yelling any more.?

so fucking perfect. and shady. and creepy. rob's almost childlike innocence is really unsettling and i'm just no realizing that the main character has no name. i automatically assumed it was brad in the beginning when "You ask him if he took his Haldol before bed" but somehow it turned to Chester in my mind without warrant. so i don't know what's up with that, but i love it. <33

This is...just plain neat. :D It's such a cool concept! And I love Rob's innocence in this, it's the perfect offset to the creepy plot. And this could go to a really dark place and I like that you gave it that hopeful ending instead, like Sam's at peace and he's not going to be bothering Rob anymore. And I have to wonder if he was killed at 3 am and that's why he always shows up then...? Anyway. Kudos. <3

How creepy! Poor Rob.

Poor Sam too, it was strangely nice that Rob found Sam's remains and 'set him free'

In my head it was Chester he was calling. Great job!
